2nd Notice for Backyard Trees - Highgate OA
Posted on Apr 30th, 2026

This email is the second reminder to owners that the Design Guidelines for the maintenance and trimming of all backyard trees are the responsibility of the homeowner.  All backyard trees must be trimmed to the edge of their backyard fences so that their branches do not hit or rest on any structure or building, do not cover the alleyways or encroach on their neighbor's property.

The recent declaration of a severe drought in Virginia makes the enforcement of this HOA rule important to the safety of the entire community; the heavy overgrowth in the alleyways is a fire hazard.

Several homeowners have reached out to the HOA, suggesting that the community could get a discount for their tree trimming if we used JL Tree Service and negotiated for a discounted rate.  Angie Croke and I (as a resident and NOT part of my HOA responsibilities) will help facilitate this strategy; however, EACH  homeowner is solely responsible for its contract and costs.

    1.  The residents who join together will negotiate the overall costing or contract terms to try and get a better deal, but each resident must finalize his/her contract and cost.
    2.  I will act as the point of contact for homeowners who want to do it as a group.   Again each project is the sole responsibility of the homeowner.  The residents (not HOA) will ask for a discount if enough homeowners agree to use JL Tree Service.
    3. If you are interested in joining a group of residents to see if we can negotiate a lower cost for individual resident jobs, please contact Leslie Lewis at lewisleslie@mac.com.
    4. The Spring HOA Architectural review will address the backyard tree issue and cite owners if they are in violation.
